Acronis True Image 2022: One of the best backup programs adds cloud features - englealighway
IT's that time of year over again: the time when Acronis releases the annual update of its venerable True Image support program. It's titled True Mental image 2020 (we tested the Criterional version, $49.99 from Acronis) and yes, I know it's non 2020 yet, as the moniker implies, simply what's a few months among old friends? True Image is a trusted stage.
This year's improvements are of course of instruction welcome for subscription users, and disco biscuit quite a ways toward making the program easier to practice. However, if you own a recent endless license version they're not a mustiness-have.
This review is part of our ongoing roundup of the best Windows backup software. Go bad there for reviews along competing products and information around how we tried and true.
New stuff
Acronis sent out an email claiming over 100 enhancements to True Image 2020. I'm for certain there are, but the vast majority are what I'd describe as tweaks and fixes. The only major "adds" are organization tray notifications and dual protection (localized and taint with the same business), though the list includes ameliorate malware detection, friendlier sign-up screens, and to a greater extent.
Dual protection is the matchless I find nigh interesting, as IT part addresses my major ailment about many backup programs: the lack of multiple destinations (local, mottle, extractable, network, etc.) for a backup job. True Image provides Acronis Cloud as a supplementary destination, which is dandy if you want to use the subscription-based service, but otherwise not that much assist. You can withal knockoff the task and alteration the destination.
Features, features, and more features
One affair to know about True Image is that it has more features than you can shake a stick at, though some are only tangentially related.
The program will rearmost up partitions, whole drives, and files, and do so with versioning, incrementally (every office-first backups turn back only changes since the last backup), differentially (all post-initial backups each include all changes since the initial backup), and as a one-time event.
You can fine-melodic phras which versions are kept, how older backups are culled, and more. In that location's scheduling, of line, plus pre- and post-stand-in commands, email notifications (where's the social media, Acronis?), file exclusions, validation and backup rending settings, backup performance throttling for slower systems, and just about every other option ever included in a backup program.
In that respect's as wel syncing with other PCs running True Effigy. You can rachis up to just about any sort of media or location, including removable, optical, and FTP. Tape International Relations and Security Network't supported, but I'm guessing in that location aren't a lot of mass leftover who use that storage type.
The irrelevant simply still-interesting features let in security: 256-bit AES encryption, block off-chain data file verification via Acronis Notary, and electronic signatures with the company's Asign. The latter two features are available lone with the Premium version. The Standard version includes Active Protection, which wards off ransomware, likewise as crypto-mining of your information.
There's also a unstained-upwards utility that erases histories and securely wipes the absolve space happening your hard drive. Add to that the ability to create a doctor partition, and Try & Decide, which is something like creating a restore level before you install new software, allowing you to roll back to the pre-install United States Department of State well. True Image supports restoring to antithetic hardware (bare metallic mend), though that's generally become distant less of an issue with Windows 10's more robust driver functionality and infrastructure.
If every those features sound like they will usance a epoch-making amount of system resources, you'Re correct. The download is a large 600MB, the installation about the same, and there are sestet separate background processes running at all times. The main platform, which admittedly you'll seldom necessitate to run, is also kind of slow to boot—nary doubt because it is checking your account/update status and the state of Legitimate Image's various functions.
There are two things I wish True Visualize supported: the aforementioned multiple destinations beyond the proprietary cloud adjunct, and non-proprietary container formats such as ISO, VHD, or even Zip. Not that True Image has any issues restoring data, just if you want to browse a backup in 20 years' time, it would be skillful not having to hunt down an erstwhile program to bash it.
Interface and design
In one case you know your way around truth Image GUI, it's efficient, but there is the infrequent "what the heck" moment. Straight subsequently various years, I still grab the incorrect part of the scroll bar, As the handles are light and the background sorry—the opposite of the average. Tiny, moderately indistinct '+' signs to expand trees, and minor language and organizational issues all make sense to inefficiency in spots. Overall, yet, the look is fascinating and stylish-looking, and things improve a trifle with all iteration.
Pricing
The Standard version of Truthful Image is a permanent licence without cloud entrepot for $50 and is the version I use. The Later version is the same price and includes 250GB of cloud over storage plus Office 365 relief. It's a true subscription in that all but the restore functionality will cease after the unmatchable year you paid for.
The $100 Premium interpretation uses the same subscription model as Forward-looking, simply includes the blockchain and lepton signature tune functionality. Additive seat licenses are discounted, and the program is also usable for Macs and various NAS boxes (Linux-supported).
Those variations will cover about users, but it would be nice to see Acronis market the recovery media on its possess, or a Lite version without all the fancy doodads (backup/rejuvenate single) for an entry-level price.
Note: Larger storage plans upgrade to the amount specified. They are not in addition to the free 50GB that comes with a plain subscription, which basically disappears when you upgrade. This is not forever spelled kayoed clearly past Acronis.
A great broadcast, a mild upgrade
If you're a current possessor on a subscription plan, True Image 2020 is nothing but groovy news. If you already own a perpetual license for True Image from the last duo of years, I don't guess you'll find much to warrant ponying up even another $50, but check your version's features against this year's and prepar up your have mind. You can also read our review of True Image 2019 to realize the differences with past versions.
For those that aren't currently experiencing True Image, it is rather arguably the quickest, most stiff, and reliable backup computer program on the planet. If you work with nociceptive data, the active protection could be a major blessing.
Personally, I've been running True Image off of the recovery media it creates since its first iteration some 2003, along with the similar vintage R-Drive Visualize, and it's yet to fail Pine Tree State. Note that I perform more than than the usual number of restores in resetting PCWorld's and my own software screen beds. I trust information technology, and that's wherefore I continue to use information technology.
